Without a mentor, where can I begin finding direction?
Short answer
Unseen Mentor suggests starting with your circumstances, what you want to understand and the small choices available. Self-direction can include reading, observation and asking someone suitable about a specific problem.
The introduction addresses people without advisers or supportive conditions. Chapter 1 continues by asking about choices still possible in present circumstances. Reading them together keeps self-direction close to what you have rather than waiting for a complete map. Write down three things: your current problem, what you do not yet know and the resources you can use. For example, if you do not know how to begin a skill, find an introductory resource and someone who can comment on a first attempt. This is a practical example from the article. Not having a mentor does not mean solving everything alone. A clear question helps you ask for more specific support while retaining room to consider and decide within your own circumstances.
