Idea
Does knowing more mean understanding deeply?
Short answer
No. Information becomes understanding when we see connections, limits and what could make a conclusion wrong. Even deep understanding does not guarantee we see the present situation accurately.
Information can arrive in seconds. We may remember a definition, repeat a model and state an author’s conclusion correctly without changing our way of seeing.
Three different levels
- Knowing means being able to recognize or repeat information.
- Understanding means seeing relationships, causes, limits and conditions of application.
- Seeing means recognizing what is actually happening in a specific situation.
Foundational knowledge helps us ask good questions and detect persuasive but incorrect answers. Yet knowledge can also become a mold that lets us recognize only familiar patterns.
After receiving an answer, ask: can I explain it myself, what could make it wrong and what signals in this situation do not fit what I know? These questions turn information into material for thought.
