Is mindful observation about controlling emotions?

Short answer

In the book, mindful observation begins by seeing an emotion as it is, without forcing it away or demanding positivity. Awareness does not mean following every impulse; we remain responsible for our actions.

Ask the author about this

When sad or angry, we often want to return quickly to a comfortable state. Mindful Observation asks another question: before fixing an emotion, can you see clearly what is happening within you?

Awareness is neither denial nor abandonment

The author distinguishes observation from hiding emotions or covering feelings with positive words. You can notice discomfort in the chest, a thought of arguing back and a wish for recognition. You need not rush to conclude that these make you a bad person.

  • Acknowledge bodily sensations and emerging emotions.
  • Notice accompanying thoughts without immediately treating them as correct conclusions.
  • Separate having an emotion from deciding to say or do something harmful.

Mindful observation does not guarantee emotions will dissolve immediately or all difficulties resolve themselves. You may still need rest, boundaries or suitable support. Observation here is presented as the book’s perspective rather than a treatment method.
