How can I observe body, mind and surroundings while working?
Short answer
Begin within the task: notice posture and breathing, recognize emotions and thoughts, then attend to what is actually happening around you. Mindful observation does not require withdrawing from work.
Mindful observation need not be a separate activity added to your schedule. You can notice tense shoulders in a meeting, held breath before a difficult email or reading while your mind keeps returning to another task.
Three directions of attention in one situation
- Body: feel the body’s support, hands, shoulders and natural breathing.
- Mind and thought: notice impatience, worry, a wish to win or recurring thoughts.
- Surroundings: see the email’s content, the words being spoken and the task’s specific requirements.
Before answering a message, for instance, you may notice rapid typing, irritation and that the message only asks for one detail to be clarified. This moment distinguishes the task from a defensive reaction. You still write the reply and complete the work afterward.
Do not force yourself to observe everything at once or maintain perfect attention. Start with an easily noticed signal. If you discover you have become lost in thought, that recognition is itself present experience.
