Idea
Why keep reading when AI can summarize everything?
Short answer
AI can take us quickly to conclusions, while deep reading lets us follow how an argument is formed, tested and revised. We still read to develop judgment rather than simply obtain information.
A summary is useful when we need a quick view of a book’s subject, main argument and sections relevant to a current question. AI makes this orientation faster than reading sequentially from the first page.
What a summary leaves behind
A conclusion is a temporary destination in a process. Deep reading shows which observations an author began with, how evidence was chosen, how objections were addressed and where the argument’s limits were revised. This process helps readers practice thinking.
- Use AI to obtain an initial map and identify sections worth reading.
- Read deeply when you need to understand the reasoning rather than only the conclusion.
- Pause to challenge and explain what you have read in your own words.
AI can help choose where to invest attention. It does not make that investment redundant. When the goal is to develop ability and judgment, the journey toward an answer still matters.
