What is mindful observation?

Short answer

For Phương Bùi, mindful observation means seeing the body, emotions, thoughts and surroundings as they occur, without rushing into judgment or familiar reactions. This awareness can be present in everyday activities.

Ask the author about this

In Mindful Observation — The Art of Effortless Action, Phương Bùi uses mindful observation to describe awareness of what happens both within and around us. Its starting point is close at hand: how you are sitting, what you hear, which emotion is arising and what story the mind is telling.

Notice what is present before concluding

A colleague has not replied to a message: that can be observed. “They do not value me” is an interpretation that may follow. Mindful observation invites noticing both the event and the interpretation rather than immediately treating the first thought as truth. You can still investigate the cause and address the task.

  • Body: notice posture, breathing and current sensations.
  • Mind and thought: notice emotions, thoughts, wishes or reactions as they arise.
  • Surroundings: hear and see what is happening without rushing to assign meaning.

As the author presents it, mindful observation is not reserved for sitting still. It can be present while washing dishes, writing email, talking or deciding. You do not need to reach a special state before beginning; a moment of noticing that you are rushing is itself something to observe.
